The Samuel T. Gomez Award is presented each year by the Philadelphia Bar Foundation in partnership with the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Pennsylvania (APABA-PA) to recognize a law student who has shown exceptional dedication to public service and advocacy for underserved communities.

This award honors the legacy of Samuel T. Gomez, Esq., a passionate advocate, educator, and community leader who dedicated his life to serving others and advancing justice. It celebrates law students who embody his spirit of service and leadership, regardless of background or ethnicity.

Award Criteria

Recipients of the Gomez Award demonstrate a strong commitment to:

  • Participating in legal services or public interest programs.

  • Advocating for access to healthcare, housing, employment, and public assistance.

  • Supporting individuals impacted by domestic violence, disability, and other systemic barriers.

  • Promoting equal justice through individual or class-based advocacy.

The award alternates each year between University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and Temple University Beasley School of Law—two institutions closely tied to Mr. Gomez’s legacy as a teacher, mentor, and advocate.

The Samuel T. Gomez Award is presented at the annual APABA-PA Dinner, a celebration of legal excellence and community impact. Through this award, Mr. Gomez’s enduring influence on legal education, public service, and community empowerment continues to inspire future generations of legal professionals.
