We are excited to announce this year’s Judge William M. Marutani Fellows, Nicholas Chan and Lisa Riley!

The Judge William M. Marutani Fellowship provides a stipend to subsidize a summer internship position with a nonprofit public interest organization or with a federal, state or municipal government entity in Pennsylvania or in the Greater Philadelphia area. The Fellowship was established by the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Pennsylvania (APABA-PA) in conjunction with the Philadelphia Bar Foundation.

Nicholas is a second year law student at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, pursuing a J.D./M.S.P.P.M. at Carnegie Mellon University Heinz College. Prior to law school, Nicholas worked as a regulatory compliance administrator with iTalkBB and completed an internship with the U.S. Department of State’s Foreign Service Institute. He received his B.A. in Government and Asian Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. Nicholas is a recipient of the prestigious Peggy Browning Fellowship. This summer, Nicholas will intern with our nonprofit partner Justice at Work.

Lisa is a third year law student at the Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law. Prior to law school, Lisa worked as a subrogation paralegal for Allstate Insurance Company. She received a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice from Neumann University. During her time at Villanova Law, Lisa has served as President of the Asian and Pacific Law Student Association and has completed internships with Legal Aid of Southeastern Pennsylvania, Jackson Cross Partners, LLC, and the Eastern District of Pennsylvania’s U.S. Bankruptcy Court. This summer, Lisa will intern with our nonprofit partner Consumer Bankruptcy Assistance Project.

The Judge William M. Marutani Fellowship serves to honor the legacy of Judge Marutani, the first Asian-American judge in Pennsylvania, a distinguished member of the judiciary who served both the Asian American community and the community at large for many years. Judge Marutani’s exemplary career is a model for current students who are committed to public service.

Congratulations to Nicholas and Lisa, as well as the rest of this year’s qualified candidates, who deserve recognition for their accomplishments and commitment to service.

If you would like to support the Marutani Fund, you can make a secure donation through the Philadelphia Bar Foundation website. Please be sure to select the "Memorial/Tribute Gift" option, and indicate the "Marutani Fellowship" as the gift recipient.
